ESStroke (Cerebrovascular Accident)
Brain damage caused by an interruption of blood flow.
When a stroke affects the brain area that controls the bladder and bowel, or the pathways that carry their signals, incontinence can appear suddenly.
It shows as a loss of awareness of the need to go, or as the inability to reach the toilet in time because of one-sided paralysis. Rehabilitation often improves the situation.

Definition
A stroke deprives an area of the brain of blood. Urinary problems are common at first: the bladder empties without control or urges are hard to hold.
Causes
A clot (ischaemic stroke) or a brain haemorrhage, favoured by high blood pressure, atherosclerosis or atrial fibrillation.
Diagnosis
- Emergency brain CT scan, then MRI.
Treatments
Emergency treatment of the stroke, then rehabilitation. Urinary problems often improve within weeks; bladder training and suitable protection support this period.
